The lawyers in our education law group advise school boards and independent schools throughout Canada in their education law, labour relations and employment law needs. Our group is one of the largest education law groups in the country. We are, therefore uniquely positioned to provide our clients with expert, timely and innovative advice on a host of education, labour and employment issues as well as the legal expertise of our colleagues from other department within the firm.
Challenges and Approaches
The education law issues of today are more diverse and complicated than ever before. Increasingly, those involved in education, whether as teachers, administrators or lawyers, are facing new issues that are unique to the field.
The education law issues confronting our clients on a daily basis often require immediate attention. Accordingly, the advice we give is timely and practical, emphasizing the objectives and needs of our clients.
Our Focus
We regularly advise school boards and independent schools on a range of labour relations and employment law issues. We also provide advice to boards and schools on education law issues, including those arising from student discipline, safe schools, negligence and liability, human rights, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, freedom of information, pay equity and special education concerns. In addition, we have been an effective and responsive advocate for school boards and independent schools before both the courts and administrative tribunals.
The lawyers in our group write and lecture on education law issues and participate in the affairs of the Canadian Association for the Practical Study of Law in Education ("CAPSLE") and the Education Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association ("CBA"). Accordingly, we have developed an awareness and knowledge of both the technical and practical aspects of education law matters. Two of our lawyers, Melanie Warner and Rob Weir, are currently on the executive of the Education Law Section of the CBA. In addition, Eric Roher, Chair of the Education Law Group, is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where he teaches a course on Education Law.
