Background

Martin (Marty) Sclisizzi is a partner at our Toronto office. Marty was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1974. He graduated from Queen's University, Faculty of Law in 1972.
Prior to that, he majored in philosophy and political science and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in 1969.

Areas of Practice

  • Civil Litigation and administrative law, appearing as counsel before all levels of courts, including Superior Court of Justice, Court of Appeal for Ontario, Federal Court of Canada, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada and regulatory bodies and alternate dispute resolution tribunals.
  • Practice involves a broad range of civil litigation, including class action proceedings, commercial disputes, shareholder and corporate disputes, banking, environmental, real property, labour injunctions, employment, education law cases, judicial review and appellate practice. Below is a list of some reported cases in which Marty appeared as counsel.

Professional Experience

  • Certified since 1989 by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Civil Litigation Specialist
  • Extensive trial, appellate court and judicial review experience.
  • Has represented corporate clients and individuals in a vast variety of corporate and commercial litigation matters, including shareholder disputes, directors' and officers' liabilities, oppression and other corporate litigation, banking, environmental, estate, real property, labour and employment and education law matters, defamation cases and in class action proceedings.
  • Since called to the Bar has represented banks and other financial institutions in a vast variety of banking and financial institution litigation matters, including lender liability issues, receiverships, insolvency, mortgage and other security enforcement, bills of exchange, letters of credit, breach of trust and fiduciary duties and class action proceedings.
  • Has represented clients in the petroleum fuel industry and has acted as trial counsel in a variety of environmental cases.

  • Former Instructor at the Law Society of Upper Canada, Bar Admission Course, Civil Litigation Section (1980-1992) and Creditors & Debtors Rights Section (1982-1986), Law Society of Upper Canada, Civil Litigation Specialty Committee.
