Background
Mort Mitchnick joined Borden Ladner Gervais LLP's Labour and Employment Group in September of 2005 as Counsel to the National Firm and as a partner located in our Toronto and Ottawa offices. He is a graduate of McMaster University and obtained his law degree at the University of Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1972.
For many years a distinguished arbitrator and mediator, Mort has served as Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, and as Alternate Chair of the Ontario Public Service Labour Relations Tribunal. He was a long-standing "panel" arbitrator in a wide variety of sectors across North America, including Major League Baseball. He regularly served as well as ad hoc chair of federal public service conciliation and arbitration boards, and of Boards of Inquiry under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Mort's practice currently embraces all aspects of Labour and Employment Law, in both the private and public sector. He is a senior advisor to all levels of Government, and represents clients as counsel before the Courts and a variety of statutory tribunals.

Professional Experience
- Mort began his professional career as a management labour lawyer, first as an associate and then as a partner with the firm of Miller Thomson in Toronto. His practice encompassed all aspects of labour and employment law including the negotiation of collective agreements, the presentation of rights and interest arbitrations, and advice and advocacy in wrongful dismissal actions.
- As of 1979 Mort became a Vice-Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, and then of the Ontario Crown Employees Grievance Settlement Board. He served as well as Alternate Chair of the Ontario Public Service Labour Relations Tribunal, and from 1989 to 1992 was Chair of the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
- Mort served as a private arbitrator and mediator, as well as a statutory adjudicator and mediator under the School Boards and Teachers Collective Bargaining Act, the Employment Standards Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and the Canada Labour Code. He served for a number of years on the standing panel of arbitrators in a wide variety of sectors, including Major League Baseball, electrical power generation, the steel and airline industries, and the college, university and municipal sectors. Most recently he was permanent Facilitator to the Physician Services Committee of the Ministry of Health and Ontario Medical Association.
- Mort as well has over 30 years of experience as counsel, arbitrator and mediator in civil "Wrongful Dismissal" actions.
Professional and Community Activities
- He has conducted a wide range of seminars on both the Labour Relations Act and Labour Arbitration and has lectured for many years in the University of Toronto's Advanced Program in Human Resource Management on a variety of employment-related statutes such as the Labour Relations Act, Canada Labour Code, Human Rights Code and Pay Equity Act.
- Mort has also served many years as a Head Coach in the York Mills Hockey Association.
