Background
Julio Arboleda is a partner in the Calgary office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Julio was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1997.
He graduated from the University of Calgary Faculty of Law in 1996 and won a number of awards and scholarships during his time in law school. He was also a member of the first place team in the Phillip C. Jessup Internal Law Moot, Canadian National Round, and placed second in the preliminary Worldwide Round (Washington D.C.) hosted by the American Society of International Law (April 1996). He is listed in Who's Who Legal – The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers Oil and Gas for 2009/2010.
In addition, he has completed a Masters in Law (LLM) in e-business from Osgoode Hall, York University, Toronto in 2004. His masters paper was on the impact of the privacy legislation on mergers and acquisitions.
Prior to law school, Julio received a B.Sc. in biochemistry and a B.A. (Hon.) in philosophy from the University of Calgary. He also works in both English and Spanish.
Practice and Professional Experience
- Julio works in our energy and commercial department. He has a varied commercial practice. A large portion of his work arises in a mergers and acquisitions context, and he has three preferred practice areas:
- Trans-National Issues and Private International Law, particularly in transactions with Latin America. This work has included acquisitions and divestitures, complex due diligence, advising on market entry and bids and contracts, as well as specialty matters. He also served, on secondment, as an International Legal Advisor with the Caracas, Venezuela, office of Clyde & Co., a UK law firm, in 1998 and 1999.
- Privacy Law Issues. In addition to academic work in the area, has advised with respect to privacy issues arising in mergers and acquisitions, and has also advised numerous organizations on the design and implementation of privacy compliance programs and other privacy related legal matters. In addition, he has advised clients with respect to privacy breaches and investigations by the Privacy Commissioner Alberta.
- Oil and Gas. He has handled numerous upstream oil and gas transactions and other petroleum industry service contracts. He has also performed Upstream and Engineering related legal work on secondment to one of Canada 's largest integrated oil and gas companies, and also on secondment to an international process engineering firm.
