Background

Matthew Alter is a partner in the Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1987. Matthew graduated with an LLB from the University of Windsor Law School in 1985, and a BA (Hons) from the University of Toronto at Victoria College in 1982.

He is a past Chair of both the Ontario Bar Association, Construction Law Section, and the Law Society of Upper Canada, Construction Law Specialty Committee, and was among the first lawyers in Ontario to be Certified as a Specialist in Construction Law in 2000.

Areas of Practice

  • Matthew is a partner in BLG's Construction, Engineering, Surety and Fidelity Group, and a member of the Pubic-Private Infrastructure Projects Group.
  • His practice focuses on construction, procurement and surety law, and involves representing public and private owners, general contractors, trade contractors, construction managers and sureties at the front end of domestic and international construction and infrastructure projects, and in construction-related disputes and litigation.

Professional Experience

  • Represents litigants in all types of construction contract and project disputes, including: tendering disputes, contractor defaults, interference and delay claims, liens, trust claims, insolvency claims and surety bond claims.
  • Advises clients on early dispute resolution and dispute avoidance.
  • Reviews, drafts and negotiates RFQs, RFPs, tenders and a variety of contracts and associated agreements for construction and infrastructure projects.
