Background

Geoffrey de Kleine is a patent agent and partner in the Vancouver office. Geoff obtained a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering from Queen's University in 1993 and went on to obtain a Master in Science in Engineering from Queen's University in 1996. Geoff became a registered Canadian patent agent in 2001 after passing the Canadian patent agents qualifying examinations with the highest overall standing, and a registered United States patent agent in 2002. Geoff has been a Professional Engineer since 1997. Geoff is a member of the Intellectual Property Practice Group.

Areas of Practice

  • Intellectual Property focusing on drafting and prosecution of patent applications in all areas of the materials and metallurgical, mechanical, electrical and electronic fields, advising on intellectual property management, providing patentability searches and opinions, and advising on patent protection strategies.

  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications in Canada, the U.S. and internationally for major Canadian and international clients.
  • Developing and providing opinions on patentability, infringement, validity, inventorship and freedom-to-operate issues.
  • Undertaking IP due diligence reviews.
  • Advising on patent filing and IP portfolio strategies.

  • Member, Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC); Fédération internationale des conseils en propriété industrielle (FICPI); American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA); Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Tutor at South East Asian patent Drafting (SEAD) course for the FICPI Academy of Education.
  • Engineering position held in industry from 1996 to 1999.
